The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, January 29, 2026, presented 12 fully equipped ambulance buses to FCT hospitals in Abuja, underscoring his administration’s commitment to strengthening emergency services and improving healthcare across the territory. The move forms part of a broader strategy to ensure critical sectors including health, education, and infrastructure receive adequate attention.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Barr. Wike explained that the administration’s initial focus on road construction was essential for the effective deployment of emergency vehicles. “Without good roads, ambulances cannot function efficiently during emergencies. First things first, and that’s what we have been able to achieve,” he said, highlighting improvements in areas like Abaji, Kwali, and Gwagwalada that have already reduced response times.
The Minister also revealed that the FCT Administration is in the process of rehabilitating and furnishing 14 health centers, while the FCT Civil Service Commission has been instructed to recruit additional staff to address shortages in the health sector. He used the occasion to caution workers against actions that sabotage government initiatives, urging law-abiding conduct and dialogue to resolve disputes.
Barr. Wike acknowledged ongoing challenges with the FCT Joint Union Action Committee’s recent strike, which was suspended by the National Industrial Court. He emphasized that while the government remains open to discussion and collaboration, efforts to politicize or obstruct administration policies would not be tolerated.
Mandate Secretary for Health, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, commended the Minister for his people-oriented leadership and support to the health sector, noting that the FCT remains the only territory that has fully paid medical allowances, including residency and hazard funds. The event also drew praise from the World Health Organization’s Dr. Kumshida Balami Yakubu, who pledged continued support for FCT’s emergency preparedness and healthcare goals.
