A civic monitoring group, MonITNG, has raised serious concerns over the alarming state of Bayawa Primary Health Care (PHC) in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, describing the facility as a humanitarian disaster and a clear reflection of government neglect towards citizens’ welfare.
The centre, which serves as the only health facility for more than 3,000 residents, is said to have deteriorated completely despite constant claims by authorities that huge sums have been invested in healthcare.
According to MonITNG, the building is in ruins, with multiple leakages, shattered windows, and its surroundings overtaken by weeds.
Inside the centre, the situation is worse. The report noted that there are no beds, no chairs, no electricity, and no clean water. Expectant mothers, nursing women, and sick patients are compelled to lie directly on the floor, while health workers battle to provide services with little or no equipment.
“The facility, though large enough to accommodate the community, has been left to rot. Cracks in the walls, a collapsing roof, and total absence of repairs have turned the building into a death trap,” MonITNG said in a statement on Sunday.
The group added that the lack of medical tools and essential supplies has made quality healthcare nearly impossible, leaving the lives of thousands in jeopardy. It described the condition as nothing short of a humanitarian emergency.
MonITNG further criticized the Kebbi State Government for prioritizing political patronage over public welfare, noting that while billions of naira were spent sponsoring loyalists to Hajj, basic healthcare facilities were abandoned.
“Yet the same government that cannot fix a health centre finds resources to fund pilgrimages for political allies. While the poor and vulnerable suffer without access to life-saving care, the leadership diverts public funds into political interests,” the group lamented.
It stressed that this neglect is more than bad governance; it amounts to betrayal of public trust, especially for communities that rely on government to protect their wellbeing.
MonITNG described the Bayawa PHC as a reflection of the wider collapse of healthcare delivery in Kebbi State, where government propaganda often overshadows real service to the people.
“The authorities boast of healthcare investments, but the reality paints a picture of abandonment, neglect, and misplaced priorities,” it said.
The group insisted that residents of Bayawa and other communities deserve better, stressing that access to healthcare is not a privilege but a right.
It therefore urged the Kebbi State Government to urgently rehabilitate the Bayawa PHC, provide equipment, restore electricity and water supply, and create a safe working environment for health workers.
“Anything short of this would only extend the cycle of neglect that has denied thousands of people their most basic healthcare needs,” the group concluded.
