The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied a report claiming that he advised Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 general elections.
Obi described the report as “entirely untrue” and misleading, insisting that he has consistently advocated improved welfare, adequate equipment, protection and motivation for members of Nigeria’s security forces.
In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday and titled “I Never Said Military Should Reject Salary Increase,” the former Anambra State governor said the claim attributed to him was false.
“I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections,” Obi stated.
“This assertion is entirely untrue. My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering.”
Obi said he has consistently advocated for adequate resources, equipment and protection for security personnel, particularly those deployed to areas affected by insurgency and other security threats.
He recalled raising concerns over the loss of soldiers to insurgents, particularly following what he described as a delayed rescue effort.
“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need,” he said.
The NDC presidential candidate further stated that the welfare, safety, resources and dignity of members of the armed forces would be a priority if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
“Should I be elected President, the well-being, resources, safety, and honour of our soldiers will be a paramount priority,” Obi said.
He maintained that his criticism of the handling of security challenges should not be interpreted as opposition to improved salaries or better remuneration for members of the armed forces.
According to him, soldiers and other security personnel who risk their lives protecting Nigerians deserve adequate support and a government that will stand firmly behind them.
“Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” he stated.
“Under my leadership, scenarios where our servicemen and women are left unprotected in the face of peril will be eradicated.”
Obi urged Nigerians to disregard the report, insisting that he remains committed to articulating what he described as a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
The clarification comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with statements attributed to major political figures increasingly coming under public scrutiny.
