The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old man, Chima Ogumba, over his alleged links to armed robbery after operatives recovered a pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges from him in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
Ogumba was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, during an intelligence-led operation along Nkpor Road on Monday morning, August 17, 2026.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development on Tuesday, saying the operatives moved to the identified location following intelligence received about the suspect.
According to Ikenga, the operatives searched Ogumba during the operation and recovered a pump-action firearm and 50 live cartridges from his possession.
The police spokesperson said the suspect was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for why he was in possession of the firearm and ammunition.
The discovery has prompted the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the possession of the weapons and determine whether the suspect has any connection with armed robbery or other criminal activities in the state.
Ikenga said Ogumba remains in police custody and will be subjected to further investigation as detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, directed investigators to establish the source of the recovered firearm and ammunition and determine their intended use.
The Commissioner also ordered a thorough investigation into the suspect’s possible links with criminal networks operating across the state.
Ama reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, targeted patrols and sustained tactical operations aimed at identifying and dismantling criminal networks in Anambra.
The police said investigations into the case are ongoing.
