Barely five months after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), former Senator representing Nasarawa South, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, has resigned from the opposition party, citing what he described as persistent internal crises and unending legal battles that have crippled its operations.
In a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the ADC in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Onawo said his decision followed extensive consultations with his political associates, supporters and family members.
The former senator, who represented Nasarawa South in the 8th Senate, lamented that the party had become engulfed in prolonged litigations and leadership disputes, making it difficult to pursue meaningful political engagement.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with immediate effect. This decision was reached after careful reflection and wide consultations with my political family and supporters,” the letter stated.
Onawo said the lingering legal battles within the party had created deep uncertainty over its future, adding that he could no longer remain in an organisation facing continuous internal turmoil.
He thanked party members and leaders for the opportunity to serve under the ADC, while wishing them success in their future political endeavours.
His resignation marks another setback for the ADC, which has in recent months struggled with internal disagreements and court cases over its leadership structure and control of the party. The disputes have fuelled uncertainty over the party’s stability as political alignments begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections. Reports by Sahara Reporters have highlighted the growing tensions and legal confrontations within the party, with several aggrieved members challenging aspects of its leadership and organisational decisions.
Before joining the ADC earlier this year, Onawo was a prominent member of the PDP in Nasarawa State. His exit from the PDP was widely viewed as part of the wave of political realignments sweeping across the country ahead of the next election cycle. However, his latest resignation suggests that the internal wrangling within his new political platform has become a major obstacle to sustaining that alliance.
Political observers believe Onawo’s departure could trigger fresh defections within the Nasarawa chapter of the ADC and further weaken the party’s efforts to position itself as a formidable opposition force.
Although the former senator has yet to announce his next political destination, his latest move is expected to intensify speculation over another possible defection as political parties continue to reposition ahead of the 2027 polls.
