A planned terrorist attack targeting motorists travelling along the Kakumi–Guga Road and residents of several communities in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State was foiled after troops of the Nigerian Army, working in collaboration with other security agencies, launched a successful ambush that left eight suspected terrorists dead.
The operation, which was carried out following credible intelligence, prevented what security authorities described as a coordinated assault on unsuspecting travellers and rural communities already grappling with persistent insecurity.
According to the military, troops intercepted the terrorists before they could execute their mission, engaging them in a fierce gun battle that ended with the elimination of eight suspects. The remaining members of the criminal group reportedly fled the scene under heavy military pressure.
During the operation, security forces recovered two AK-47 rifles and five motorcycles believed to have been used by the terrorists to mobilise for the planned attack. The recovered weapons and equipment have been taken into custody as investigations and follow-up operations continue.
In the aftermath of the operation, the military announced the deployment of additional security measures across the affected axis to forestall any retaliatory attacks and reassure residents of their safety.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, said troops stationed at the Forward Operating Bases in Ruwan Godiya and Mabai had intensified aggressive patrols and area domination operations along routes suspected to be used by criminal elements.
He said the sustained operations are aimed at denying terrorists freedom of movement, preventing future attacks and ensuring the protection of law-abiding residents in Bakori Local Government Area and adjoining communities.
“The troops deployed at the Forward Operating Bases in Ruwan Godiya and Mabai have intensified aggressive patrols and area domination operations along suspected routes leading to the affected communities in order to deny the criminals freedom of action and protect law-abiding residents,” the military spokesman said.
Kangye added that security agencies remain on high alert and are closely monitoring developments, assuring residents that intelligence-driven operations would continue until terrorist and criminal networks operating in the area are dismantled.
The latest operation underscores the Nigerian military’s sustained offensive against terrorists and armed groups operating across the North-West, where attacks on communities, highways and rural settlements have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods. Military authorities maintained that coordinated operations with other security agencies would continue to restore public confidence, secure major transport routes and deny criminal elements any opportunity to regroup or launch fresh attacks.
