Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has been plunged into unimaginable grief after the bodies of his wife and two young children were recovered from the ruins of their home, more than 70 hours after devastating earthquakes ravaged northern Venezuela.

Trejo, a defender with Deportivo La Guaira, was away on club duty when twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude struck on June 24, reducing entire communities to rubble and leaving thousands dead or missing.

The merciless tremors, which occurred just 40 seconds apart, brought down the apartment building where his wife, Yanina Maranella, and their children, AarĂłn and Ainhoa, had been living. Trapped beneath tons of concrete and twisted metal, the family never made it out alive.

The footballer rushed back to La Guaira immediately after learning of the disaster, joining rescue workers, volunteers, and grieving relatives in a desperate race against time. For four agonising days, hope battled despair amid the ruins.

But on Sunday, that hope was extinguished.

Rescuers recovered the bodies of his loved ones from the wreckage, confirming a tragedy that has shaken both the football community and a nation already overwhelmed by catastrophe.

The twin quakes, described by officials as the most powerful to hit Venezuela in more than a century, have claimed over 1,400 lives, injured thousands, and left tens of thousands unaccounted for. Coastal regions, including parts of Caracas and La Guaira, suffered catastrophic destruction, with entire neighbourhoods flattened in a matter of seconds.

What was once a thriving seaside community has become a vast graveyard of broken homes, shattered dreams, and families searching desperately for answers beneath mountains of debris.

In an emotional statement, Deportivo La Guaira pledged unwavering support for their grieving player.

“At this time of immense sorrow, we offer our prayers for the eternal rest of their souls and for Lucas to have the strength to face this tragedy,” the club said. “Lucas, you are not alone. Your MarĂtimo La Guaira family is with you.”

As aftershocks continue to rattle the devastated region, Trejo’s heartbreaking loss has emerged as one of the defining human stories of the disaster—a painful reminder that behind every statistic lies a family destroyed, a future stolen, and a love buried beneath the ruins.

For Lucas Trejo, the earthquake did not merely bring down walls; it buried an entire world.
