Abia State Governor Alex Otti has formally declared his intention to seek a second term in office, citing the need to complete key projects initiated by his administration.
The governor made the announcement on Monday at his country home in Nvosi, located in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, during a large solidarity rally organised by local stakeholders.
Addressing supporters, Otti explained that his decision to run again is driven by the existence of unfinished developmental work across the state. He pointed to ongoing efforts in infrastructure, social services, and economic reforms as areas requiring continuity.
According to him, if his administration had fully achieved its objectives, there would be no justification for seeking re-election.
While acknowledging the importance of opposition in a democratic system, the governor criticised some political actors for what he described as unproductive criticism. He urged opponents to focus on constructive engagement rather than dismissing visible government achievements.
Otti also used the occasion to encourage citizens to participate actively in the democratic process. He called on eligible voters to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), noting that civic participation is essential for meaningful political involvement. He further urged members of the Labour Party to complete their registration within the party structure ahead of future primaries.
Reflecting on his political journey, the governor recounted past electoral challenges and his eventual emergence as governor in 2023, attributing his success to perseverance and faith.
The rally, organised by Dannie Ubani, a Labour Party House of Assembly candidate in the 2023 elections, drew several speakers who commended Otti’s leadership and highlighted achievements in road construction, transport infrastructure, and other development projects.
With this declaration, political activities in Abia State are expected to intensify as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 general elections.
