Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have launched an investigation into a suspected fake lawyer, John Anoruo, over alleged possession and use of a forged seal belonging to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Anoruo, who reportedly runs a legal and educational consultancy in Ikorodu, Lagos, was arrested on Monday, April 20, 2026, by operatives attached to the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 in Ikoyi.

According to investigators, the case originated from a petition dated September 22, 2025, which Anoruo submitted to the EFCC on behalf of his clients against Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited. However, further scrutiny revealed that both the initial petition and a subsequent withdrawal letter dated March 5, 2026, carried a forged NBA seal.

During interrogation, Anoruo reportedly admitted to obtaining the fake seal from a business centre in Lagos.

The suspect also disclosed that although he earned a law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, he did not attend the Nigerian Law School, a mandatory requirement for legal practice in the country.

EFCC officials confirmed that investigations are ongoing, adding that the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
