A Nigerian diaspora organisation has appealed to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to decline the proposed appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico.
In a letter addressed to the Mexican leader, the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria (GCSDN) criticised the nomination, describing Omokri as unsuitable for the diplomatic role. The letter was signed by the group’s Global Coordinator, Frederick Odorige, who urged the Mexican government to reject the posting.
According to the organisation, the appointment lacked proper scrutiny in Nigeria. The group alleged that Omokri’s nomination did not undergo thorough screening by the National Assembly of Nigeria, claiming he was allowed to take a bow and leave without the usual legislative examination.
The letter further alleged that the Nigerian government moved quickly with the appointment to avoid debate over what it described as a controversial nomination.
GCSDN also raised concerns about Omokri’s public record, accusing him of engaging in divisive rhetoric and controversial political commentary. The group referenced past remarks he made about Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a televised interview on Arise TV, which it said contributed to public criticism surrounding his nomination.
The diaspora group also suggested that the appointment may have been politically motivated, alleging that the ambassadorial role could serve as compensation for political support.
In the letter, GCSDN warned that accepting the appointment could raise diplomatic concerns, claiming Omokri’s presence might create unnecessary tensions.
The organisation urged the Mexican government to consider what it described as diplomatic and security implications before approving the posting. It concluded by advising Mexican authorities to act cautiously regarding the nomination.
Copies of the letter were reportedly sent to Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Mexican Senate, and the Mexican Embassy in Nigeria.
