Barely a day after assuming office, the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has removed the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, as part of ongoing changes within the police hierarchy.
Sources within the police confirmed that the process leading to Hundeyin’s removal began on Thursday, March 5, 2025, though the full details surrounding the decision were still unclear at the time of this report.
The development comes shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially inaugurated Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police. Disu was appointed as the 23rd IGP following the removal of Kayode Egbetokun, who had led the Nigeria Police Force since 2023.
According to findings, Hundeyin’s removal was carried out on Thursday morning as part of internal restructuring within the force.
A senior police source confirmed the development, stating that the former spokesperson had been relieved of his duties.
“The Force Public Relations Officer has been removed this morning,” the source disclosed.
However, it remains uncertain who will replace Hundeyin in the key media and communications role. Sources say operational activities within the force have intensified since the change in leadership.
“We do not yet know who will take over from him. Many expected him to remain longer given his professional experience,” the source added. “But when a new Inspector-General takes office, it is common for several positions to be reviewed. Unfortunately, he was affected.”
Hundeyin, an Assistant Commissioner of Police from Badagry in Lagos State, was appointed as Force Public Relations Officer by former IGP Egbetokun.
An alumnus of Lagos State University, Hundeyin holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Language. He also earned a Master’s degree in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology from the University of Ibadan.
He further strengthened his professional training with a Certificate in Civil-Military Coordination from the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Training Centre in Jaji, Kaduna State.
Throughout his career, Hundeyin has served in several strategic communication roles, including as Police Public Relations Officer at the Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos. He also participated in the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur in 2020.
Police authorities are yet to officially announce his replacement as the force continues internal adjustments under the new leadership.
