Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai is expected to be moved to Kaduna State for a fresh corruption trial, according to a senior security source.
The development comes as El-Rufai remains in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), although details of the new charges and trial timeline are yet to be disclosed.
The planned trial follows earlier findings by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which investigated his administration from 2015 to 2023 and reported alleged financial irregularities. Speaker Yusuf Dahiru Liman confirmed that the report had been forwarded to relevant authorities.
Current governor Uba Sani has also accused the former administration of leaving behind significant financial liabilities, including claims of unaccounted funds, an allegation denied by El-Rufai’s allies.
Meanwhile, El-Rufai is pursuing a separate case at the Federal High Court, Abuja, where he is challenging his detention and seeking ₦1 billion in damages. He has accused ICPC officials, including Chairman Musa Adamu Aliyu, of attempting to pressure him into abandoning politics.
The Nigeria Police Force has, however, defended its actions, insisting that the search of his residence was conducted legally under a valid warrant.
The case has been adjourned to March 25, 2026, while developments around the new trial in Kaduna are expected to unfold in the coming days.
