The Nigeria Police Force has addressed allegations that ₦100 million was transferred from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account to Victor Adewale Egbetokun, son of the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the funds were paid into Victor’s account in error and were subsequently reversed.
According to Hundeyin, upon learning of the transaction, he contacted the IGP’s son, who confirmed that ₦100 million had appeared in his account. He said the funds were immediately returned to the Anambra State Government’s account.
“The IGP’s son explained that he noticed the ₦100m in his account and instructed his accounts officer to reverse the transaction immediately, which was done,” Hundeyin said during the programme.
However, reports alleged that the transfer occurred in four tranches of ₦25 million each in September 2025 from the Anambra State security vote account domiciled in Sterling Bank into Victor Egbetokun’s Zenith Bank account.
Documents cited in the report claimed the funds were later electronically reversed on September 29, 2025. The publication further alleged that the same amount was subsequently redeposited in cash into the account in four tranches on October 2, 2025 claims that have generated public scrutiny.
Sources familiar with the matter reportedly stated that Victor Egbetokun held no official position within the Anambra State Government or any recognised security agency at the time of the alleged transaction.
Meanwhile, Kayode Egbetokun’s recent exit as Inspector-General of Police has continued to draw attention. He is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, who currently oversees the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos, pending official confirmation.
As of press time, there has been no indication of any formal investigation outcome publicly released regarding the disputed transaction beyond the Police’s explanation that the transfer was an error and was reversed.
