The Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, has denied reports that its State Commander’s firearm accidentally discharged during a training exercise in Owo, an allegation that whistleblowers say left five personnel injured.
The denial was issued on January 29, 2026, as the agency sought to clarify conflicting accounts of the incident. In a statement signed by the Corps’ Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Adeniken, Amotekun described the circulating reports as “false, baseless and a gross misrepresentation of facts.” He said, “At no time did the Corps Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, discharge a firearm accidentally or otherwise, nor was he involved in any incident leading to gunshot injuries.” The statement added that the activity on January 26, 2026 was a routine range classification exercise for newly recruited personnel and was concluded successfully without casualties.
The whistleblower version,widely shared on social media, alleged that the commander’s firearm had misfired during training, leading to injuries among both serving Amotekun officers and newly recruited trainees. Although these claims have gained traction in some quarters, the official response insisted the narrative was “deliberately sensationalised and intended to undermine the image of the Corps and the security architecture of the state.”
Amotekun reaffirmed its commitment to discipline and professionalism, assuring the public that training activities are conducted under strict safety protocols and that its personnel and citizens remain protected. The agency urged members of the public and media to rely on verified information from official channels and dismiss reports that do not reflect the facts of the exercise.
