Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi is set to stand trial in France over a rape allegation dating back to 2023, as he continues to strongly deny the accusation.
The Nanterre prosecutor’s office confirmed that the case has been referred to a criminal court following the conclusion of investigations. The Morocco international has maintained that the allegation is unfounded and says he is confident the judicial process will clear his name.
In a statement shared on social media, Hakimi said: “Today, a rape accusation is enough to justify a trial, even though I contest it and everything proves that it is false. It is as unfair to the innocent as it is to sincere victims. I await this trial calmly, which will allow the truth to come out publicly.”
His lawyer, Fanny Colin, also confirmed the referral to trial and criticised the decision, arguing that the case is based solely on the complainant’s account and lacks corroborating evidence.
Conversely, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Rachel-Flore Pardo, welcomed the development, stating that her client was relieved the matter would now be examined publicly. She reportedly described the judiciary’s handling of the case as exemplary while also noting broader challenges within professional football in addressing such issues.
Hakimi, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, has remained active with the club during the legal proceedings. When asked about the matter ahead of a Champions League fixture against AS Monaco, PSG coach Luis Enrique declined to comment, saying the issue is in the hands of the authorities.
The forthcoming trial is expected to attract significant public attention given Hakimi’s profile in European football and his role with the Morocco national team. French courts will now examine the evidence presented by both sides as the case proceeds.
