Workers in six Abuja Area Councils have joined the ongoing industrial action in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), escalating pressure on Minister Nyesom Wike and the FCTA. The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), FCT Chapter, announced an indefinite strike starting Tuesday, January 27, 2026, in solidarity with the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), citing unresolved grievances affecting council staff.
The decision was confirmed in a statement jointly signed by NULGE FCT President Ibrahim Abdullahi Kabi and State Secretary Sa’ad Abdulmumini following an emergency State Executive Council meeting. The union said the strike is aimed not only at supporting JUAC’s demands but also at pressing for the resolution of pending issues directly between the union and the FCTA ministerial committee.
The strike comes as the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Abuja Division, prepared to deliver a ruling in a suit filed by Minister Wike and the FCTA against JUAC leaders. The suit seeks to restrain the union from continuing the industrial action, which has already paralyzed operations in key FCTA offices, including the Secretariat, with public services severely disrupted.
Despite claims by the FCTA that most worker demands have been addressed, union leaders insist several critical issues, particularly unpaid entitlements and welfare concerns, remain unresolved. The strike underscores mounting tensions between FCT management and its workforce, highlighting the growing challenge facing Minister Wike in restoring normalcy to government operations across the capital.
