The Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEHUR) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately reverse the newly announced committee on contractor debt verification and instead authorize the prompt release of overdue payments for projects executed under the 2024 Appropriation Act.
CEDEHUR described the new committee as “a delay tactic and an unnecessary duplication of existing statutory processes.”
“We do not need another committee — Nigerians need transparency and payment now”
Speaking in Abuja, CEDEHUR stressed that contractors who executed government-approved projects should not be subjected to further delays.
“Mr. President, with all due respect, Nigeria does not need another committee. Contractors need their payments. These projects were delivered, loans were taken, and due process was followed. What is owed must be released without delay.”
Government cannot claim ignorance
CEDEHUR expressed concern that the Presidency is only now responding to the over ₦4 trillion contractor debt burden.
“There were protests, press releases, demonstrations, and widespread media coverage. How can anyone claim the President was not aware?”
The organization further noted that the fact that the President was briefed by the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) rather than the Minister of Finance raises deeper questions about coordination, transparency, and governance within the administration.
“The treatment of Nigerian contractors is unacceptable”
CEDEHUR condemned what it described as systemic neglect and disrespect toward Nigerian contractors.
“Foreign firms are paid promptly while Nigerians who execute the majority of national projects are left to suffer. This is discriminatory, economically harmful, and completely unjustifiable.”
The organization revealed that eight individuals connected to the affected contractor groups have reportedly died from debt-induced stress, while many others face bankruptcy, loss of property, and severe economic hardship.
Committee described as wasteful and unnecessary
CEDEHUR emphasized that Nigeria already has established financial management institutions with clear responsibilities.
“We have the Ministry of Finance, the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Budget Office, and the BPP. Creating a new committee is an admission of failure and an attempt to mask systemic breakdown.”
Clear demand to the President
CEDEHUR called on President Tinubu to take prompt and decisive action:
“Our demand is straightforward — release funds for all verified 2024 projects. No new committees. No delays. No excuses.”
CEDEHUR vows to intensify national advocacy
The organization concluded with a commitment to escalate its nationwide civic engagement efforts until justice is achieved.
“We are peaceful, patriotic, and committed to justice — but we will not be silent. CEDEHUR will intensify advocacy nationwide until transparency is restored and rightful payments are released.”
