The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed plans to arraign a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as Shameleon, on Friday over the alleged killing of a dispatch rider in Lagos Island.
Arrest And Background
Adio, aged 55, was taken into custody after he allegedly attacked the rider during a confrontation on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, on September 17, 2025.
Eyewitness Accounts
According to witnesses, the incident started when the rider reportedly blocked Adio’s vehicle. The situation quickly turned violent as Adio, assisted by friends, launched a brutal assault on the victim.
Video footage that surfaced online showed Adio repeatedly punching the rider alongside his companion, while onlookers failed to intervene.
Witnesses further recounted that the rider was struck several times with a helmet and fists until he collapsed. He was later rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.
Police Confirmation
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Bababseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the case, noting that the suspect is being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba. He added that Adio will be arraigned in court on Friday.
Lagos Assembly Reacts
The Lagos State House of Assembly has also stepped into the matter, demanding that the suspect and his accomplices be prosecuted without delay.
Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, strongly condemned the attack, calling it “a barbaric, shameful, inhuman, and heartbreaking act that must be punished by law.”
Call For Disciplinary Action By NURTW
Adedeji also urged the Lagos leadership of the NURTW, led by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to suspend Adio and distance the union from his “lawless conduct.”
“The NURTW should uphold professionalism and must not accommodate members who disregard human life or expect their violent actions to be excused,” he added.
