The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has submitted a formal petition to the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, demanding the arrest and prosecution of an activist, Mr. Christopher Okhai Okhani, in connection with the alleged murder of Inspector Akor, a police officer attached to the state governor, Monday Okpebholo.

Dated August 4, 2025, the petition was signed by the party’s Legal Adviser in the state, Stephen I. Okoror Esq. It alleges that Inspector Akor was gunned down in 2024 during an attack that occurred at the Benin Airport while Governor Okpebholo was arriving from Abuja, shortly before the last governorship election in the state.

The party claims that the assailants, allegedly led by Okhani, had launched an assassination attempt on the governor. In the process, a bullet fired during the attack struck Inspector Akor, killing him instantly.

The petition further stated that after the incident, a number of the suspects were arrested, but Okhani allegedly fled the scene and has remained at large since then.

The APC described Mr. Okhani as the mastermind of the attack, labeling him a “notorious murderer.” According to the petition, he has now resurfaced in Edo North, allegedly leading another group of armed individuals believed to be plotting new acts of violence in the region.

The party urged the police to act with urgency in apprehending Okhani and his suspected accomplices and ensure they are brought before a competent court for prosecution.

A portion of the petition reads:
“I, the undersigned, wish to bring to your attention the brutal murder of a police officer assigned to the current Governor of Edo State, Mr. Monday Okpebholo, by one Mr. Christopher Okhai Okhani and his associates, an incident that took place just before the gubernatorial election last year.

“On that day, the governor had flown into Benin from Abuja and was accompanied by Inspector Akor. As they arrived at the airport, the suspect, Mr. Okhani, along with his gang, ambushed them and opened fire on the governor and his security detail. Sadly, the bullet struck Inspector Akor directly, leading to his immediate death.”

The petition also recounted that following the tragic event, Okhani’s accomplices were apprehended, while he managed to escape. Since then, efforts by law enforcement to arrest him have reportedly been unsuccessful.

The letter continues:
“Mr. Okhani, believed to be the gang’s ringleader, fled to an unknown location and evaded capture. Despite ongoing efforts by security agencies, he remains at large.

“However, recent information indicates that he has now resurfaced in Edo North, where he is allegedly heading another group of armed individuals, likely planning to cause further disturbances. This pattern of committing crimes, disappearing, and resurfacing makes him particularly dangerous and underscores the need for swift action.”

In conclusion, Okoror passionately appealed to the Police Commissioner to ensure that Okhani and his associates are arrested and charged to court without delay.

“Sir, we are pleading with you to deploy your office’s authority to bring this criminal and his gang to justice. The party appreciates your cooperation and hopes that immediate action will be taken,” he added.
