The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Prof. Olowo Samuel, has attributed the recent killing within the university premises to the activities of suspected internet fraudsters, widely known as “Yahoo Boys,” alongside intruders who illegally gained access to the campus.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, Prof. Samuel clarified that contrary to widespread rumours on social media, the deceased was not a registered student of AAU.
He explained that investigations revealed some individuals had forcefully entered the campus, leading to violent incidents, one of which resulted in the death of an unidentified man.
According to him, police findings confirmed that the victim had no ties to the institution. He was reportedly brought in a vehicle, assaulted near one of the hostels, and later dragged into the bush, where he was killed.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that several arrests had been made in connection with the matter, and those apprehended had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Benin City for further interrogation.
Prof. Samuel also raised concerns about how internet fraudsters had been using the university environment as a cover for their criminal activities.
He noted that in recent times, the management had recorded cases of intruders breaching the campus, which had posed serious security challenges to the institution.
“Some unscrupulous individuals have converted the university surroundings into a hideout for their fraudulent ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ operations,” the VC said.
Describing the development as disturbing and unacceptable, he explained that it was one of the reasons the school authority had resolved to tighten security measures within the campus.
He added that, as part of safety measures, students had also been restricted from driving vehicles into the university compound to ensure better monitoring and protection.
