The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the resumption of direct cargo revenue collection at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, ending a 15-year break.
According to a statement released on Saturday by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, officials from the Directorate of Cargo Development and Services have now been deployed to cargo release points at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) warehouses. Their role is to oversee real-time monitoring and collection of accrued cargo charges.
The statement explained that the new measure has already started addressing revenue leakages and is helping to strengthen accountability within the country’s air cargo value chain.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has achieved a major milestone with the successful return to direct revenue collection at the Lagos cargo terminals, following a 15-year pause,” the statement noted.
“For the first time in over a decade, FAAN officials from the Directorate of Cargo Development and Services are permanently stationed at the NAHCO and SAHCO warehouses to monitor and collect charges in real time. Working closely with the PTC Customs Area Command under the leadership of Comptroller T. Awe, the move has already reduced leakages while ensuring better transparency across the chain.”
The Authority emphasized that this initiative reflects FAAN’s renewed commitment to operational efficiency, transparency, and stronger collaboration with other agencies. It added that the development is not only improving revenue generation but also enhancing the ease of doing business in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
FAAN further expressed optimism that the success at MMIA would be replicated at other airports across the country, in line with its long-term vision to improve cargo operations and create additional value for the aviation industry.
