American singer Sean Kingston has been handed a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence over his involvement in a $1 million fraud case linked to luxury goods.
The 35-year-old artiste, born Kisean Paul Anderson, was convicted in March alongside his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner. Both faced charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud as well as four separate counts of wire fraud. Turner had earlier received a five-year prison term in connection with the same scheme.
According to prosecutors, Kingston took advantage of his celebrity image to obtain expensive items such as a bulletproof Cadillac Escalade, high-end wristwatches, and even a 19-foot LED television, without making payments. Court filings revealed that he produced fake wire transfer receipts and enticed sellers by offering the prospect of social media exposure.
During Friday’s sentencing at a federal court in South Florida, U.S. District Judge David Leibowitz denied a request from Kingston’s legal team for a delayed surrender, citing health concerns raised by the defense. Instead, the judge ordered that the singer be taken into custody immediately.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Anton described Kingston as “a thief and a conman,” stressing that he had repeatedly used his fame to trick and defraud victims. On the other hand, defense lawyer Zeljka Bozanic argued that Kingston struggled with financial irresponsibility and had already begun efforts to repay those he defrauded.
Kingston and his mother were arrested in May 2024 after a SWAT team stormed his rented residence in Fort Lauderdale.
The Florida-born artiste, who spent part of his childhood in Jamaica, rose to stardom at just 17 years old with the release of his 2007 chart-topping single Beautiful Girls.
