Tragedy struck at Government Secondary School, Bichi, in Kano State, as two students lost their lives and two others sustained severe injuries following a brutal assault reportedly carried out by senior students inside the school’s hostel.
The incident, which occurred late in the night of Sunday, July 14, was brought to the attention of the police the following day by the school’s principal, Yusuf Ado Yakasai. According to Yakasai’s report, the attack took place around 11:30pm and involved a group of senior students who allegedly targeted four younger students over suspicions of engaging in so-called “unnatural offences.”
The principal identified the victims as Hamza Idris (19, SS3B), Umar Yusuf (18, SS2C), Ibrahim Ibrahim (SS2B), and Aliyu M. Nasir (SS2C). He told the police that the seniors reportedly lured the four students into a hostel room before unleashing a violent assault on them.
“All four students were brutally beaten by a group of their seniors over allegations that they were involved in unnatural acts,” Yakasai was quoted as saying in his formal statement.
Following the attack, the victims were rushed to Bichi General Hospital. Sadly, Hamza Idris and Umar Yusuf were confirmed dead on arrival, while Ibrahim and Nasir were admitted for treatment and are reportedly showing signs of recovery.
Confirming the incident, the Kano State Police Command announced that 12 senior students have been arrested in connection with the deadly assault. The arrested suspects include Suleman Abdullahi, Ahmad Sanusi, Lawan Alasan Tambai, Aliyu Idris, and Abubakar Abdulaziz — all from SS3A. Others are Ibrahim Nura and Hamza Isiyaku (SS3B), Usaini Mamuda, Masaudu Idris, and Yasir Murtala (SS3C), along with Abubakar Muhammad of SS3D.
The police spokesperson stated that investigations are currently underway, adding that anyone found guilty would be charged and prosecuted accordingly.
“We have taken the suspects into custody, and investigations are ongoing. Once concluded, those found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” the police assured.
The incident has sparked outrage among parents and education stakeholders, with many calling for justice and a thorough review of boarding school safety protocols in Kano State.
