The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has dismissed a viral video making the rounds on social media, particularly on Facebook, which allegedly shows one of its train coaches engulfed in flames.
In a statement released on Saturday, July 20, 2025, and signed by the Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the NRC clarified that the video in circulation is not recent but from an incident that occurred more than three years ago on the Warri-Itakpe railway line.
“We wish to clearly state that the fire incident captured in the video happened over three years ago on the Warri-Itakpe rail corridor. It is not a recent development and does not reflect the current state of any of our operations,” the statement said.
The Corporation cautioned members of the public against further sharing of the old footage, emphasizing that such behavior fuels unwarranted fear and erodes public confidence.
“We appeal to Nigerians to refrain from spreading outdated or misleading visuals, as these only stir panic and feed misinformation,” the NRC urged.
The statement further warned that the distribution of such misleading materials is counterproductive to efforts at building public trust and promoting national growth.
“Sharing false or obsolete content is detrimental to public confidence and impedes developmental efforts. It should not be encouraged under any circumstance,” it added.
Reiterating its unwavering dedication to safety and quality service delivery, the NRC emphasized that it continually upgrades its systems to align with globally accepted standards.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation is committed to ensuring safety, reliability, and comfort for passengers across the country. We are consistently refining our services in line with global best practices,” the agency assured.
The Corporation also advised Nigerians to always confirm the authenticity of information from verified NRC platforms before sharing it with others.
