Prominent human rights advocate and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has slammed the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, labeling it a “bigger disaster” compared to that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which he described as a “catastrophe.”
Sowore made the statement through a post on his official Facebook page, expressing serious concern over the deteriorating state of the nation under the Tinubu-led government. He cited worsening economic hardship, rampant insecurity, weak governance, and gross incompetence as defining features of the administration barely a year into its tenure.
“Buhari’s presidency was a catastrophe,” Sowore wrote. “However, Tinubu’s current administration is an even bigger disaster.”
As the convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Sowore strongly criticized President Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, arguing that they have plunged millions of Nigerians into deeper poverty. According to him, these policies were implemented without putting in place adequate social safety measures, causing food and transport costs to skyrocket while the naira continues to fall and corruption thrives unchecked.
He accused the Tinubu administration of being not only inept but also completely disconnected from the daily struggles of the average Nigerian. Sowore noted that prices of basic commodities have tripled in many areas, while living conditions continue to worsen across the country.
His remarks come amid a wave of public frustration over rising inflation, erratic electricity supply, and unrelenting insecurity. Incidents of kidnapping, banditry, and terrorist attacks remain widespread, with many Nigerians expressing disappointment that the much-anticipated economic reforms have only resulted in more suffering.
Sowore also took aim at the makeup of Tinubu’s cabinet, describing it as a gathering of recycled political figures rather than a team built on merit. He alleged that appointments were handed out as rewards to political loyalists instead of being based on competence or a genuine desire to fix the country.
“What we are witnessing isn’t governance,” Sowore said, “but an elite arrangement meant to enrich the same individuals who have ruined this country for decades. The result, unfortunately, is predictable — failure.”
Sowore, known for his persistent criticism of Nigeria’s political establishment, has long spoken out against successive administrations. During Buhari’s presidency, he was arrested and held by the Department of State Services (DSS) in 2019 for calling for the #RevolutionNow protest. Despite facing multiple legal challenges, he has remained an outspoken opponent of the ruling elite.
With the 2027 general elections drawing nearer, many analysts believe that Sowore is positioning both himself and the AAC as a formidable alternative to the mainstream political class.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to demand genuine change, warning that failure to act would only deepen the current crisis. According to him, what the country needs is leadership that serves the people, not one that takes advantage of them.
