Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed concern over the prolonged detention of Chukwu Sunday Obasi by the Department of State Services (DSS) without trial.

Obasi has been held since March 2021 after allegedly condemning persistent herdsmen attacks in the South-East. According to Ejimakor, Obasi has been denied access to legal representation and his family throughout his detention.

“Chukwu Sunday Obasi has been detained by DSS since March 2021 without trial. Efforts by lawyers have proved futile,” Ejimakor stated, revealing that all attempts to secure Obasi’s release or ensure he receives due process have been unsuccessful.

He further explained that Obasi was accused of being a member of IPOB, an allegation he considers baseless. “They accused him of being an IPOB member just because he was condemning the Fulani herdsmen attacks in Igboland,” he said.

Ejimakor called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to intervene and ensure Obasi’s release, describing his detention as part of a broader suppression of Igbos who speak out against insecurity in the region.

“The Federal Government should direct its security agencies to halt this persecution of Igbos who are perceived to be fighting for justice for Ndigbo. Free him, now!” he demanded.
