Protesters in Lagos Revive Old National Anthem to Rally Support Amid Nationwide Demonstrations

In Lagos State, a significant gathering of Nigerians participating in the ongoing #FearlessInOctober protests has been spotted passionately singing the old national anthem. This move comes as a direct challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which officially adopted the National Anthem Bill 2024 in May, reinstating the anthem from Nigeria’s first republic, “Nigeria, we hail thee.”

A video shared by The Guardian on X shows demonstrators chanting the former anthem, “Arise O’ Compatriot.” The protesters are also seen holding various placards, demanding a swift repeal of policies they deem harmful under the Tinubu government.

Earlier reports from SaharaReporters indicated that thousands of individuals in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, joined the protests on Tuesday morning, expressing their discontent over the escalating hardships and poverty affecting the populace since Tinubu took office.

Images from the Abuja protests revealed demonstrators shouting, “We are hungry,” as they marched through the streets. Many displayed banners with messages such as, “Bad Governance has ended the dreams of Nigerian youths; end it now,” and “Enough is Enough – Revolution Now.” One protester emphasized the severity of their situation, stating, “We are buying fuel for N1000 and you expect us not to come out and protest. What are we saying – we are hungry?”

Human rights activist and leader of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Comrade Omoyele Sowore, has called upon Nigerians nationwide to join the October 1st protests, highlighting issues such as hardship, unemployment, insecurity, and poverty exacerbated by the current administration.
