A woman identified as Mrs. Ada Ogbogu has been taken into custody by the Enugu State Police Command for allegedly inflicting serious injuries on her three-year-old stepson using a pestle. This disturbing incident has drawn significant attention and highlights the state’s firm stance against child abuse.
The arrest was confirmed on Saturday by the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, who stated that Mrs. Ogbogu, a resident of Sunrise Estate in Emene, was detained on Friday and is now in police custody.
Mrs. Enih emphasized that this response illustrates the state government’s commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring that such heinous acts are swiftly addressed. She underscored that Enugu State is determined to prevent child abuse and warned that those who mistreat children would face severe consequences.
Detailing the incident, Mrs. Enih said, “After receiving information from one of our whistleblower channels on Friday, I immediately informed the police, and we moved to the location. However, Mrs. Ogbogu was not there. We proceeded to the National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu, where we found her and arrested her in coordination with the hospital management.”
According to Mrs. Enih, the victim’s femur, or thigh bone, had been fractured. “We were at the bedside of the young boy, witnessing firsthand the severe impact of this cruelty. It’s unimaginable that anyone could treat a child this way,” she added. “Enugu State, under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, has declared zero tolerance for child abuse. This case will be handled as an example to deter such actions, with a thorough investigation by the police.”
In the wake of the incident, Nkechinyere Mbah, the governor’s wife, has also expressed her deep concern and has been actively involved in ensuring justice for the young victim. She has promised to support the child’s recovery and guarantee he receives the necessary medical care to aid his healing process.
