In a significant breakthrough, the Bhoiwada Police in Mumbai have arrested a fugitive who had been evading authorities for nearly three decades in connection with an attempted murder and robbery case dating back to 1998.
According to police sources, an Additional Sessions Judge at the City Civil and Sessions Court issued a non-bailable warrant for the arrest of Mohammad Rafiq, also known as Baba Abdul Sattar Sheikh, who resides in Parel. This warrant was linked to an attempted murder case filed in 1995 under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The warrant was forwarded to Bhoiwada Police Station for execution. Given that Rafiq had been absconding and was also wanted in a 1998 FIR filed at the same station for offenses under Sections 342, 394, 326, and 34 of the IPC, a special team was established to locate him.
The investigative team started by examining old records and gathering information about Rafiq’s acquaintances and relatives listed in those documents. Their investigation revealed that the fugitive had spent time in Odisha and Jammu & Kashmir. Furthermore, they discovered that Rafiq often traveled to Mumbai to buy rare and antique items, such as chandeliers, from Chor Bazaar, located within the jurisdiction of the J.J. Marg Police Station. These items were then sold in various states.
On October 24, the police received credible information that Rafiq intended to visit relatives in Antop Hill. Acting on this lead, the team conducted surveillance at the location and spotted a man fitting his description. He was subsequently brought to the police station for questioning, where he confirmed his identity as Mohammad Rafiq alias Baba. Following this, senior officials were notified, and Rafiq was formally arrested.
