The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has announced the suspension of Senator Dino Melaye, the party’s former governorship candidate, due to alleged anti-party activities.
The suspension was disclosed in a memo from the party’s executive committee in Ayetoro Gbede, Ward 1, dated September 12, 2024. The memo states: “On September 12, 2024, the Ward Party Executive Committee convened to review the disciplinary committee’s report regarding Senator Dino Melaye’s alleged anti-party conduct.”
Melaye was asked to appear before the party’s Disciplinary Committee on August 20, 2024, to respond to accusations of misconduct. According to Article 57(4) of the PDP Constitution, he was required to attend in person or via legal representation. Despite receiving multiple summons and reminders, Melaye’s failure to appear led the committee to recommend his immediate suspension, pending approval from the ward executive.
The disciplinary panel included Chairman Owonibi Babarinde, Secretary Asaju Earnest Ade, and members Ireti Alyejiwa, Omolade Esho, Eniola Olorunfemi, Mukala Ismail, and Olowo Ruth. They had set a timeframe for Melaye to appear between August 26 and August 31, 2024, at 10 am.
An additional letter sent on August 31, 2024, reiterated the need for Melaye’s appearance and mentioned that August 31 was the final day for the panel’s review. The panel granted a three-day extension for his appearance, warning that failure to comply would result in disciplinary measures.
