The Niger State Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Danmaman, has revealed that 713 crime suspects, including teenagers, were arrested for various offences in the state between January and December 2024. These crimes include homicide, armed robbery, kidnapping, and car theft.
Speaking at a press briefing in Minna, Danmaman highlighted the link between rising crime rates and the high number of out-of-school children in the state. He noted that many teenagers have been drawn into criminal activities due to a lack of education and guidance.
“The large population of out-of-school children has played a significant role in the increase in crime, particularly among teenagers,” Danmaman stated.
He also provided updates on police operations throughout the year, reporting the rescue of 37 kidnapped victims. The police also recovered various firearms and ammunition during their efforts to combat crime in the state.
Discussing the tragic murder of Hadiza Umaru, the Commissioner revealed shocking details of the case. “The victim was poisoned under the guise of receiving treatment for ‘evil spirits,’ and her body was buried in a shallow grave,” he said.
Danmaman further disclosed that the investigation into Umaru’s murder led to the discovery of additional graves in the same area, indicating the possibility of more victims.
