Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has disassociated himself from any individuals attempting to mediate with legal icon, Afe Babalola, over a defamation case linked to his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

Speaking on Friday during a visit by fellow human rights lawyer Tope Temokun, Farotimi categorically stated that he never authorized anyone to plead on his behalf. He emphasized his opposition to any intervention or negotiation, insisting that the legal process should run its natural course.

Farotimi addressed reports suggesting that supporters, including Labour Party’s former presidential candidate Peter Obi, had visited Afe Babalola. He firmly warned against any further visits or pleas for his release.

Chronicles Reporters previously reported that Peter Obi, also a former governor of Anambra State, met with Afe Babalola in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. Obi reportedly appealed to Babalola to consider Farotimi’s plight, as he is currently detained at Ekiti prison.

During the visit, Temokun recounted that Farotimi expressed frustration over lawsuits being filed in multiple locations—Ibadan, Abuja, and Rivers—while he remains in detention. According to Temokun, the legal documents are being served to a man who cannot adequately defend himself from a prison cell in Ekiti.

Temokun shared insights from their discussion: “Around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 13, 2024, we left the Correctional Service facility on Afao Road, Ado-Ekiti, after meeting with Dele Farotimi. He spoke calmly but delivered a powerful message. He stood firm on the truth of his book’s content and expressed confidence in his ultimate vindication.”

Farotimi clarified that while he could not control Peter Obi’s actions, he never asked anyone to visit Babalola on his behalf. He reiterated that he does not support any form of negotiation or plea for his release, emphasizing his desire for the matter to follow due process.

“He said unequivocally that if any part of his book contained lies, he would accept defeat. However, if the truth is his weapon, he will emerge victorious,” Temokun stated.

Temokun also called attention to the timing of the lawsuits, questioning why legal actions were delayed until Farotimi’s arrest and detention. “This book has been available for some time. Why now? Why wait until he was detained and his voice silenced?”

He continued: “Farotimi’s critics accuse him of recklessness in his writings. Instead of seeking justice, they have resorted to convicting and crucifying him without giving him a fair hearing. Is this how justice should work?”

Temokun concluded with optimism, saying, “Though the storm rages now, it will not last forever. The truth will emerge, and justice will prevail.”
