A Lagos State resident, identified as Iya Lati, has recounted how some Nigerian police officers allegedly assaulted and humiliated women during an operation to seize a motorcycle. In a video obtained by Chronicles Reporters, the officers were seen physically attacking a woman, with one of them stripping her naked.
Speaking in an audio recording shared with Chronicles Reporters, Iya Lati claimed to be one of the victims of this police brutality. She explained that the incident unfolded when the officers attempted to confiscate a commercial motorcyclist’s bike in her neighborhood.
According to her, trouble began when the policemen, dressed in plain clothes, tried to seize the bike. “The policemen pushed the bike owner, causing his key to fall. One of them immediately picked up the key. Initially, the motorcyclist thought they were robbers and began shouting for help, but we later discovered they were police officers,” she said.
The motorcyclist, she recounted, pleaded for his bike, lamenting that the police had already confiscated his previous one and he could not afford to lose another. “He even told them to kill him instead. A scuffle ensued, and I stepped out to intervene. It was the very day I reopened my shop after being out of business for six months due to illness,” she added.
Iya Lati explained that the officers began dispersing the women who had gathered, using excessive force and threatening violence. She described how one woman standing near her shop was stripped naked by the officers before managing to escape. Unfortunately, this act redirected the officers’ aggression toward her.
“They started beating me, tearing my clothes, including my undergarments. At first, it was two officers, but soon two others joined them, making it four. I was severely beaten and eventually fainted. My body could not withstand the assault because I was still recovering from an illness that had kept me bedridden for six months. I was later rushed to the hospital,” she narrated.
Iya Lati’s ordeal didn’t end there. She revealed that after she was rescued, the police arrested her daughter, Nafisat, and subjected her to the same brutal treatment. “They beat my daughter as they did to me, even though she had done nothing wrong. They also arrested another of my daughters,” she lamented.
The disturbing incident raises serious questions about police conduct and accountability in Lagos State.
