Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has extended his congratulations to John Dramani Mahama following his victory in Ghana’s recent general election. Tinubu’s message of support was delivered in a statement by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday in Abuja.

The statement revealed that Tinubu personally reached out to Mahama via a phone call, expressing his hope that Mahama’s return to power would promote greater stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Tinubu commended the Ghanaian people for their steadfast dedication to democracy, highlighting the peaceful and orderly conduct of both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Nigerian leader further praised Ghanaians for once again demonstrating to the world that democracy remains the key to achieving political stability, economic growth, social justice, and transparent governance in Africa. Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria, alongside the entire region, continues to hold the belief that the right of the people to freely choose their leaders is an enduring source of pride.

In his remarks, Tinubu also recognized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana and candidate for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), for conceding defeat even before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission. Tinubu described this as a powerful testament to Ghana’s democratic spirit.

Reflecting on Mahama’s return to the presidency, Tinubu noted that the Ghanaian people’s trust in Mahama’s leadership, having previously served from 2012 to 2017, was a clear endorsement of his vision for the country’s future.

In addition, Tinubu renewed his support for strengthening the ties between Nigeria and Ghana, emphasizing their shared history, cultural connections, mutual assistance, and commitment to Pan-Africanism, democracy, the rule of law, and economic cooperation.

The statement also conveyed gratitude to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo for his exemplary leadership, which has significantly contributed to Ghana’s progress and regional peace. Tinubu expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Mahama’s incoming administration to further enhance bilateral relations and foster a prosperous future for the West African region.
