The Kwara State Government has taken disciplinary action against a teacher at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, for physically assaulting a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.

Chronicles Reporters earlier reported that the corps member had accused some staff of the school of subjecting her to physical abuse.

According to an insider familiar with the incident, the assault occurred when the corps member visited the school last week to retrieve her clearance letter.

“The issue began when one of the teachers claimed she did not greet properly. That escalated into physical assault, during which her clothes were torn,” the source revealed.

This incident has raised concerns about the welfare and safety of corps members posted to schools in the state.

When contacted, Carol Lembu, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, confirmed that the matter was being addressed. She added that arrangements were underway to transfer the affected corps member to another location.

“The issue has been reported to the appropriate government agency for investigation. Meanwhile, the corps member will be reposted to ensure her safety,” Lembu stated.

In a press release by Sam Bola Onile, Press Secretary to the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), the government confirmed that an investigation had established the culpability of the teacher, identified as Hamzat Fatimoh Nike, in the unprofessional conduct.

The statement, jointly signed by Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, and Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar, Executive Chairman of TESCOM, described the teacher’s actions as a violation of public service rules.

The release detailed that the teacher was found guilty of fighting on duty, using foul language, insubordination, and disrespecting the national identity symbolised by the NYSC uniform.

As a result, the teacher has been demoted by two grades, transferred to another school, and will undergo counselling sessions.

“The state government strongly condemns such abuse under any guise,” the statement read. “We deeply regret this incident and reassure the NYSC management that such behavior does not reflect the values of Kwara State. Measures are being taken to ensure it never happens again.”

The statement also called on teachers in the state to uphold ethical standards and adhere to established protocols, assuring them of ongoing training on teaching ethics and professional conduct.
