The local government elections in Kano witnessed an unusual scene as police personnel were noticeably absent from polling units, leaving security duties to local vigilantes and security personnel from the Kano Road Transport Agency, known as Karota. Many vigilante members, carrying sticks and locally made swords, were stationed behind voters, ready to maintain order as residents prepared to cast their votes, according to Channels TV.

As of the latest report, electoral officers have started arriving at various polling stations. This followed a ruling from the Kano State High Court, which granted the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) permission to proceed with the elections. This decision overruled efforts by various political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and 13 other parties, to halt the process.

Presiding Judge Justice Sanusi Ma’aji clarified that KANSIEC has the constitutional right to organize and oversee local government elections across all 44 local government areas in Kano State. This authority was reaffirmed despite opposition from several political entities.

In light of the court ruling, the Kano State Police Command confirmed its decision to refrain from participating in the election. This stance was communicated by the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Abdullahi Haruna, through a video message on Friday. Haruna explained, “We will comply with the court order restricting us from involvement in the upcoming Kano State Local Government Election. Nonetheless, we remain committed to our primary responsibility of safeguarding lives and properties.”

Superintendent Haruna further emphasized the command’s commitment to respecting the judicial directive. “The court order clearly states that the Police should not participate in the election. Therefore, while the police will not be involved directly in the electoral process, we remain vigilant and committed to ensuring peace and security throughout Kano State,” he added.
