A hit-and-run driver has tragically killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Ekiti State. The officer, identified as ASP Idris Lawal, was attached to the Ekiti State Police Command and met his untimely death at a checkpoint along Iworoko Road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred on Monday night. An internal police memo, obtained exclusively by SaharaReporters, confirmed the details surrounding the fatal accident.

According to the memo, ASP Lawal was on duty alongside his team conducting a stop-and-search operation when a white, unregistered Mercedes Benz struck him. The hit-and-run driver immediately fled the scene.

The report further stated that Lawal was quickly rushed to Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti for medical attention. However, despite efforts to save his life, the medical team later confirmed him dead.

The memo reads: “Sitrep from Oke-Ila Division; Fatal Motor Accident; Grateful be informed that today, being 10/09/2024, at about 0023hrs, an information received from Inspr. Segun Adedeji, attached to Patrol Mine, indicated that while on stop-and-search duty at Ayemi Garage along Iworoko Road, Ado-Ekiti, a hit-and-run unregistered Mercedes Benz vehicle, white in color, knocked down AP/No 145800 ASP Idris Lawal. He was rushed to Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital for treatment but was later confirmed dead by the medical doctor.”

The body of the late officer has been deposited at the EKSUTH mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted. Efforts are currently underway to apprehend the driver responsible for the incident.
