An ex-convict and alleged member of the Eiye confraternity was recently arrested by the Dragon Squad 2 in Ijoko-Ota, Ogun State, as he prepared for a confrontation with a rival cult group. The suspect, detained during the operation, admitted in his statement to owning one of the firearms, which he claimed he had purchased in Cotonou, Benin Republic, for N40,000. “The other gun belongs to a friend,” he revealed. “I bought mine for N40,000 in Benin Republic with his help. I’ve never used it; I only bought it for self-protection, not to harm anyone,” he stated during his parade at Zone 2 headquarters in Onikan.
Zone 2 Police spokesman SP Ummar Ayuba explained that the arrest followed intelligence directed by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, who received reports about the suspect’s involvement in cult-related activities terrorizing Ijoko-Ota and Sango areas in Ogun State. To address these issues, the AIG tasked DSP Adeyemi Akeem, Officer-in-Charge of Dragon Squad 2, with leading a discreet operation.
According to Ayuba, “On October 10, 2024, around 04:39 am, officers apprehended Ibrahim Babatunde, an ex-convict, during a raid in the Ijagba area of Sango-Ota. During the arrest, two locally made single-barrel pistols and two live cartridges were recovered. The suspect admitted to acquiring the weapons from Benin Republic for N80,000 each and confirmed his affiliation with the Eiye confraternity. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects involved.”
