The House of Representatives has called on electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to place tertiary institutions on a more affordable service-based tariff. This appeal followed a motion presented by Rep. Abubakar Hassan Fulata during Thursday’s plenary.

Rep. Fulata raised concerns over the financial strain on these institutions, noting that limited federal funding has already compromised their operations. He pointed out that recent increases in electricity tariffs, along with power disconnections for institutions unable to meet payments, have left many campuses without power. This lack of electricity threatens essential equipment and jeopardizes the safety of both students and staff.

Fulata warned that if electricity costs are not reduced, institutions may be forced to raise fees, potentially sparking student protests with serious implications for national stability.

Following discussions on the motion, the House urged the federal government to instruct the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), DisCos, and other relevant agencies to suspend additional charges and halt power disconnections for public tertiary institutions. Additionally, the House recommended that these institutions be moved to a more affordable tariff band, such as Band ā€˜C’ or Band ā€˜D.’
