Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marc Miller, has announced a significant reduction in the number of permanent residency slots for the coming years. Currently aiming to accept 500,000 new permanent residents each year, Canada will soon scale back these targets, starting in 2025.

Under the new guidelines, Canada will aim to welcome 395,000 permanent residents in 2025, followed by 380,000 in 2026, and 365,000 in 2027. This adjustment forms part of Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan for 2025-2027, designed to slow population growth temporarily. According to Miller, this pause will ensure that population growth remains sustainable and manageable, helping Canada to maintain its social and economic infrastructure over time.
