President Tinubu has made significant changes to his cabinet, as announced by Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesman, on Wednesday. A new Ministry of Regional Development has been established to oversee various regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission. Additionally, the National Sports Commission will now take on the responsibilities previously handled by the Ministry of Sports.

These decisions were made during the recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. Onanuga also revealed that the Ministry of Tourism will merge with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.

As of now, the futures of Abubakar Momoh, the former Niger Delta Affairs Minister, and John Enoh, the former Sports Minister, remain uncertain. Furthermore, details regarding the leadership of the newly merged ministry are still pending, with no confirmation on whether Hannatu Musawa, the culture minister, or Lola Ade-John, the tourism minister, will take charge.

Tinubu has faced considerable pressure to reorganize his cabinet. Last month, Onanuga hinted that a cabinet reshuffle was on the horizon.

In a press conference held at the State House in Abuja, Onanuga expressed concern that the administration’s efforts were not adequately communicated to the public. He stated, “The President has indicated his intention to reshuffle his cabinet, and he will certainly do it. I cannot confirm if it will occur before October 1, but it is definitely on the agenda.”

Discussing the current administration’s performance, Onanuga mentioned that the president had instructed his ministers during the last FEC meeting to actively engage with the public regarding their initiatives. He pointed out that some ministers had been hesitant to interact with the media, urging them to overcome this issue. “There is a perception that the government is not doing enough, but in reality, it has achieved a lot. It is crucial for the ministers to promote the work of their ministries,” he noted.
