The University of Abuja is in mourning following the death of Inaolaji Ayomide, a 21-year-old first-class graduate. He tragically passed away on October 20, just two days after his graduation.
Ayomide, who graduated with an impressive 4.7 GPA in Statistics, was involved in a motorcycle accident near the university campus. The accident, which claimed his life, has left the institution and his family devastated. At his burial at the Gwagwalada Cemetery, Dr. Olarenwaju, Head of the Statistics Department, described him as “an exceptionally brilliant student.”
According to eyewitnesses, Ayomide was a passenger on a commercial motorcycle (okada) when it collided with a white Toyota car. Both the motorcycle rider and another passenger, Dayo, a 500-level Agriculture student, died instantly.
Two of Ayomide’s friends, Dennis and Christian, arrived shortly after the crash, only to find police officers already at the scene. Witnesses accused the police of negligence, claiming that they prioritized taking the car driver and their vehicle to the station over rushing Ayomide to the hospital. At the time, Ayomide was still showing signs of life.
Despite their pleas, the police allegedly refused to let Ayomide’s friends use the Toyota to transport him. The friends were eventually forced to hire a commercial taxi to take him to Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Ayomide, the only son of his widowed mother, is also survived by his sister.
