Nigerian police have detained two individuals following the sudden death of Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, a longtime aide to former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode. Mark, who had served as Fani-Kayode’s Special Assistant for over three decades, collapsed and died in a hotel located in Abuja’s Garki area.

Fani-Kayode made the tragic announcement on Sunday, disclosing that the 52-year-old passed away earlier that day. According to police reports, Mark was with another person at the hotel when he suddenly collapsed and died in their presence.

He was immediately taken to Asokoro District Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. In the aftermath of the incident, the individual present with Mark at the time of his collapse, as well as the hotel receptionist, were detained by the police for questioning.

Fani-Kayode expressed profound grief over the loss in a statement, saying, “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my devoted Special Assistant, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, who was with me for no less than 34 years.”

The former minister explained that Mark had left home at 5:40 a.m. on Sunday, October 13, to attend morning Mass at the Catholic Church of Assumption in Asokoro, as he was a devout Catholic. Afterward, he visited Mildy Lodge and Apartments in Garki, where he rented a room and spent time with someone before collapsing.

Fani-Kayode added, “He was taken to Asokoro District Hospital and was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body is now in the hospital morgue.”

He also revealed that the police had detained the hotel receptionist, while the manager and owner of the establishment were questioned earlier in the week. The entire hotel was sealed off by authorities for two days, and the room where Mark stayed remains closed.

“I have informed his family of the tragic news, including his wife, Barrister Patience Ndifreke-Mark, and his uncle, Mr. Clement Mathias. I have also assured them that if foul play is involved, justice will be served, and those responsible will be held accountable.”

Fani-Kayode described Mark as “like a son” and emphasized the deep bond they shared. “Mark’s passing is a huge blow to me and my entire family. We fought many battles together, shoulder to shoulder. His loss has left a great void, but I give thanks to God for his life and the 52 years he spent on this earth.”

He also pledged to support Mark’s wife and family during this difficult time, stating, “I will ensure they do not lack anything.” Fani-Kayode expressed confidence in the FCT Police Command to thoroughly investigate the matter.

“Mark was a kind, reliable, and compassionate soul who brought joy to many. He was incapable of hurting anyone. I will never forget him, and though he is gone, he will live on in our hearts.”

Fani-Kayode concluded by thanking those who have come to offer their condolences and support. “May Ndifreke’s precious soul rest in peace, and may the Lord comfort his wife and two beautiful children.”
