The Cross River State Police Command announced the arrest of six suspected Ambazonian rebels in Akamkpa Local Government Area. The arrest, carried out on Saturday, was described by the Command’s Spokesperson, Ewa Igri, as a major success for law enforcement. The suspects, aged between 18 and 36, were apprehended following intelligence reports.

According to Igri, the suspects were found in possession of various weapons, including improvised explosive devices, boots, charms, and flags. The arrest marks a significant development in the efforts to curb the activities of the Ambazonian separatists in the region.

Ambazonia, a self-declared political entity, is at the heart of a conflict driven by Anglophone separatists seeking independence from Cameroon. Since 2017, these rebels have been involved in armed confrontations with the Cameroonian military in what has come to be known as the Anglophone Crisis. The separatists have made efforts to establish governments-in-exile, with militias asserting control over parts of their claimed territory.
