Rebecca Cheptegui, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner who placed 44th in last month’s Paris Olympics, is in grave condition after a petrol attack allegedly carried out by her partner.
Cheptegui sustained severe burns covering more than 75% of her body following the attack, which took place on Sunday afternoon in Eldoret, Kenya. She was in Eldoret to use her property there for training. Both Kenyan and Ugandan news outlets have reported on her critical condition.
According to Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom, Cheptegui’s partner, Daniel Ndiema Marangach, also suffered burns during what is described as a domestic dispute. The police are actively investigating the incident.
