A coordinated effort by the Nigerian Police-led Joint Security Force is currently underway in the Oba area of Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State, as they seek to track down a group of gunmen involved in a recent violent attack.
The operation was initiated after gunmen, identified by the Anambra State Police Command as part of an armed secessionist group, launched an assault on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and the Oba Civic Centre early Tuesday morning.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters in Awka. He detailed that the attackers stormed the police division headquarters and the civic centre, hurling petrol bombs at the police facility and firing indiscriminately, resulting in the death of a police corporal.
Ikenga explained, “The suspected armed secessionist group began shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the Police Station and threw petrol bombs at the security facility, causing some of the offices and the Oba Civic Centre to catch fire.”
“Tragically, a police corporal who was severely wounded in the attack lost his life. However, the fire was eventually extinguished with the assistance of other police officers on duty and the Joint Security responding team,” he added.
Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, condemned the act, describing the attack on security facilities and personnel as a strike against the very essence of the nation. He vowed to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice.
