Severe flooding in the Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State has displaced more than 10,000 residents and destroyed vast farmlands, along with properties worth millions of naira.

The Emir of Gummi, Justice Hassan Lawal, revealed these devastating numbers during a visit by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal on Saturday. The governor visited Gummi town and the Gayari community to assess the damage caused by weeks of relentless rainfall.

During the visit, the Emir provided the governor with a detailed account of the situation. He stated, “After consulting with experts, it appears that a permanent solution is feasible. Our assessment indicates that 10,291 households have been impacted.”

In response to the disaster, Governor Lawal expressed deep sympathy for the victims and immediately announced a relief package. The package includes N100,000 in cash, along with the distribution of 10,000 bags of assorted grains, mosquito nets, and blankets.

The governor also emphasized the need for long-term flood management strategies. He outlined plans to construct new drainage systems, repair existing dams, and potentially build additional ones to prevent future flooding.

“I am here in Gummi Local Government Area to offer my condolences and conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the communities affected by last week’s heavy rainfall,” said the governor.

He further announced, “I have arranged for 10,000 bags of food, including rice, maize, and millet, to be distributed to the flood victims. The trucks are already en route to Gummi for this purpose. On behalf of the Zamfara State Government, I am also allocating N100 million in support for those affected. Additionally, we will provide land outside the danger zone for victims to build new homes.”

To ensure that relief materials reach all those affected, the state government has established a committee led by elder statesman Salihu Gumi. The committee will oversee the distribution of aid and make sure that everyone in need receives the necessary support.
