Human rights activist and leader of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, has declared that the fearless nationwide protests planned for October 2024 will continue until the Nigerian government fulfills the demands of its citizens.

Sowore made this statement during a Twitter Space session hosted by News Central TV, which was monitored by SaharaReporters on Thursday.

The next wave of #EndBadGovernance protests is set to begin on October 1, focusing on addressing the persistent issues of poor governance in Nigeria. According to Sowore, this protest will provide a platform for Nigerians to voice their dissatisfaction with ongoing problems in the country, such as corruption, insecurity, and economic difficulties.

He stated, “The government has violated the law by obtaining illegitimate orders. Within our movement, we’ve discussed that when the government misuses the law, the law must be challenged. The people have a responsibility to resist these oppressive laws.”

He continued, “During the initial #EndBadGovernance protests, the authorities tried to confine the demonstrations to specific areas by colluding with certain judges to secure these illegitimate orders. However, the people were not restricted by these government-imposed limitations.”

Sowore emphasized the success of the previous protests, saying, “The protests were successful before, during, and after. We don’t want to dwell on the past; instead, we’re focused on the upcoming protests starting on October 1. We haven’t set an end date for this one, and we won’t stop until we achieve victory.”

Sowore, who previously ran as a presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 and 2023 elections, had earlier released a list of 17 key demands from Nigerians for the upcoming ‘October Revolt’ protest. These demands, compiled from feedback during the #EndBadGovernance campaign, are being presented to President Bola Tinubu’s administration as non-negotiable.

The protesters are demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals detained during the initial #EndBadGovernance protests held from August 1-10. They are also calling for the unfreezing of protesters’ assets and bank accounts and fair compensation for the distress and hardships endured during the peaceful demonstrations.
