Peter Obi, the former Labour Party Presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has issued a stern warning about the dire security situation in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for urgent and decisive action to address the widespread insecurity that has gripped the nation, rather than relying on mere rhetoric.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Obi responded to the recent abduction of 150 people and the theft of 1,000 cattle in a Sokoto community, which followed the brutal murder of the Emir of Gobir. He expressed deep concern, declaring that Nigeria is now at the “mercy of terrorists and bandits, under an ineffective government.”

Obi, who served as Governor of Anambra State, described the current state of affairs as a “tipping point in the decline of a failing state.” He lamented the fact that Nigerians are increasingly vulnerable, with little protection from a government that seems powerless in the face of escalating violence.

“This situation is not just tragic; it’s a national emergency,” Obi stated, urging Nigerians to take collective responsibility in addressing the crisis. He stressed that the nation cannot afford to remain passive as the situation deteriorates further.

Reflecting on the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Obi expressed his profound sorrow, noting that even his initial reaction felt inadequate in conveying the depth of the loss. He pointed out that the terrorists returned to the Emir’s domain after his murder to abduct more people and steal cattle, a clear sign of the ongoing collapse of Nigeria’s security infrastructure.

“We are now at the mercy of terrorists and bandits, with a nearly ineffective government to protect us. This is not just a tragedy, but a national emergency,” Obi reiterated.

He called for more than just words, advocating for a declaration of war on insecurity, the food crisis, and poverty—issues that he believes have been manipulated for various agendas.

“It’s time for us to take collective responsibility. We cannot stand by as our nation deteriorates to this unacceptable level. We must renew our commitment to the safety and security of all Nigerians. Enough is enough,” Obi concluded.
