A 14-year-old boy, Sulaiman Abubakar, has been arrested by security personnel at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Adamasingba, Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly stealing cables valued at N300,000 from the stadium’s main bowl. The state’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke, made the announcement following her visit to the stadium to assess the damage caused by the theft. She urged staff of the state sports council to be more vigilant and emphasized that security at the facility should be a collective responsibility among all stakeholders.

Adegoke assured the public that the state government would enhance the security measures at the sports complex to prevent future incidents.

Abubakar, a Junior Secondary School (JSS 2) student at Eleyele High School, admitted to entering the stadium during a training session for the Shooting Stars Football Club of Ibadan (3SC). He revealed that he had slept overnight in one of the rooms after all entrances were locked by security personnel.

During questioning, Abubakar explained that he used a large stone to break pipes and cut the camera cables and wires connected to the canopy lights. He intended to sell the stolen items. His mother, who lives in the Sabo area of Ibadan, fainted upon seeing her son in handcuffs but was revived by staff at the stadium. She mentioned that she had previously punished Sulaiman for misbehavior the night before.

The case has since been referred to the Mokola Police Station for further action.
